Swan-Canning Estuary is not dying

Western Australia’s Swan-Canning Estuary is not dying, contrary to recent claims.

Researchers from Murdoch University found an overall improvement in the ecological condition of the estuary since mid 2000.

Though parts of the upper estuary displayed poorer health due to low oxygen conditions in deep water, researchers found that the majority of fish species avoid these areas by moving closer to the shore.

This behaviour is thought to have reduced the number of fish killed due to a major algal bloom in the Swan-Canning Estuary in 2004.
