Viral hepatitis bigger killer than HIV/AIDS in Australia

Hepatitis B and C kill more Australians than HIV/AIDS, according to an analysis of the 2010 Global Burden of Disease study.

Dr Benjamin Cowie and Ms Jennifer MacLachlan found that in 2010, an estimated 1,714 people died from hepatitis B or C in Australia while 162 people died from HIV/AIDS.

Liver cancer, predominantly caused by viral hepatitis, is the fastest growing cause of cancer death in Australia.
