Weight and age affect childbirth pain

First-time mothers, obese women and those who have longer labours experience greater pain in childbirth than other women, according to a study from Columbia University Medical Center.

The information could be used by anaesthetists when determining the most appropriate pain relief for women in labor.

Women under the age of 25 were found to have higher pains scores even after the placement of an epidural. Obese women had higher levels of pain when compared to women with a normal BMI.
