I am an evolutionary biologist, with a particular focus on conflict and cooperation in animal mating and social behaviour. Additionally, we investigate the role of chemical signals and diversity of receptor organs (antennae) in animal communication. We investigate these issues with a diversity of terrestrial invertebrates. While the primary focus of my research addresses fundamental questions in evolutionary biology, we have conducted more ‘applied’ research in the fields of forensic entomology, pest management, captive breeding programs and evolutionary medicine.
I was formerly Editor-in-Chief of the journals Behavioral Ecology and the Australian Journal of Zoology, and Associate Editor of Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. Currently, I am Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, and Chief Section Editor of Social Evolution. I am also a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Ethology. I was Associate Dean (Postgraduate Programs) of the Faculty of Science, University of Melbourne, and a Member of the Council of the University of Melbourne.
