Howard Manns (Howie) lectures on the history and sociolinguistics of English and Indonesian at Monash University.
Howie is co-author of 'Communication Across Cultures: Mutual Understanding in a Global World' (2014, Cambridge) and 'Style and Intersubjectivity in Youth Interaction' (2018, Mouton). He is also co-editor of the books 'Australian English Reimagined' (Routledge, 2020) and 'Contact Talk' (Routledge, 2020).
Howie is currently working on two major projects. First, he is a member of a research team investigating the history and evolution of Australian slang and identity. Second, he is part of a research team studying the communication styles of Deafblind Australians, with the aim of developing better training materials for interpreters.
Before Monash, he taught English in Indonesia and before that worked for the US Navy as a specialist in Iranian languages.
