Warming oceans melt ice faster than previously thought

Subsurface warming in the ocean will exacerbate the melting of ice sheets at a greater rate than previously though.

This could lead to higher-than-expected sea-level rise.

New research, based on 19 state-of-the-art climate models, proposes a new mechanism by which global warming will accelerate the melting of the great ice sheets during this century and the next.
