Arts lovers more altruistic than philistines

Those who are interested in the arts are more altruistic than those who aren’t, a US study has shown.

Researchers measured arts exposure and arts expression (making or performing art) against social participation, social tolerance, and altruistic behaviour.

They analysed data from from the US General Social Survey.

“Our positive findings could strengthen the case for government support for the arts,” study leader Kelly LeRoux said.
