Asylum seekers struggle to access healthcare

Refugees have problems accessing basic healthcare in Australia, according to a study from the ANU. They face a variety of barriers including being ineligible for Medicare and the financial and emotional stress they are often under. And health professionals sometimes struggle to understand asylum seekers' specific needs, and the different medical problems they present.

    You can only access the rebated medicare system if you are an Australian resident or NZ citizen. A refugee is a permanent resident and can access medicare. An asylum seeker cannot as they do not have a permanent visa. www.centreblog.com.au
