Blu-ray technology detects microorganisms and toxins

Blu-ray players have been used to detect microorganisms, toxins, allergens and tumoral biomarkers on optical discs.

Researchers deposited small biological samples on the surface of Blu-ray discs and used the player’s laser reader to identify bacteria and determine their concentration.

138,000 points can be imprinted on the 90cm2 surface of the discs, providing an efficient and economic analysis system that can be applied to clinical diagnosis and environmental monitoring.

Moreover, the method has produced results of comparable accuracy and sensitivity to conventional laboratory techniques.
