Children negotiating independent travel

The final years of primary school are critical to increasing a child’s autonomy and confidence to walk independently to school.

The University of Melbourne and VicHealth research found that children who walked to school without adult supervision employed similar strategies such as travelling with friends, or choosing busy routes.

Two-thirds of Victorian children are driven to school, even though they live less than two kilometres away.
