Defective gene linked to osteoporosis

Women with a particular faulty receptor lose 10 times more bone mass than women without it. The receptor for the energy molecule, called ATP, affects the impact of exercise on bone health.

In a new study, scientists found that mice which have had the receptor removed experience less bone turnover. Excessive bone turnover is the main feature osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis can result in bone fractures, reduced quality of life and premature death.
