High drug costs partly due to patent abuse

Researchers have studied the 15 most expensive drugs in Australia and found that they are subject to patents from companies other than those that developed the active ingredient.

Companies can patent a drug if they have developed, for example, a different delivery mechanism.

This misuse of the patent system is driving up the cost of drugs, the researchers say.
