The source of the coral-killing pathogen that causes white pox disease in Caribbean elkhorn coral has been identified
Human sewage was found to contain the same strain of the bacterium “Serratia marcescens” that is found in white pox diseased corals on the reef.
“These bacteria do not come from the ocean, they come from us. We are killing the goose that lays the golden egg, and we’ve got the smoking gun to prove it,” Rollins College professor of ecology James W. Porter said.
