ICU physicians defy utilitarianism

Intensive Care Unit clinicians often allocate scarce resources towards gravely-ill existing patients rather than freeing up beds to help treat a greater number of sick people, research from a US university has found.

Demonstrating a substantial trend against utilitarian practice in ICU, almost half of physicians and a third of nurses placed already-dying patients ahead of new, more curable patients.
