Microchip diabetes test

US researchers have invented a microchip-based test for type 1 diabetes.

The test is carried out by a handheld microchip which distinguishes between the two main forms of diabetes mellitus.

It does this by checking for the existence of auto-antibodies that attack a person’s insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas, a feature of type 1 diabetes but not type 2.

The study’s senior author Brian Feldman said with the new, inexpensive, portable test, diabetes could be diagnosed more efficiently.
