More friends means less charity on Facebook

Facebook users with a large online social network are less likely to share information about charitable causes.

Research has found that a phenomenon known as “free riding”: people relying on other friends to pass on information regarding charity, occurs when they have a larger social network.

The study shows there is more giving in smaller, closer-knit groups of individuals who share common interests.
