Plants set seed germination times

Plants’ genetic networks determine the dormancy of their seeds, new research reveals.

If environmental conditions are poor, plants produce dormant seeds that germinate later. Plants can also program seeds to grow immediately, to take advantage of good weather.

A study has isolated the gene network that controls when a seed germinates. Researchers say these findings could help speed up the process of crop domestication.
