Radioactive decay changes DNA sequence

A new pathway to genetic mutation has been identified by researchers at Curtain University.

The study found natural radioactivity, in particular the decay of carbon atoms, can alter chemical compounds and lead to DNA mutation.

Although radioactive decay is a natural process which occurs in all organisms, this is the first evidence to suggest it acts directly on DNA.
