Sadness may enhance pain

Feeling sad while feeling pain may make the experience even more painful.

Participants in a Japanese study were shown pictures of happy, sad and expressionless faces, while being administered an electrical current.

Though the study maintained voltage consistency, those who had seen the sad face reported more pain.

Researchers believe the results show that emotional context is an important factor when trying to understand pain in humans.
