Taking the politics out of parliament

Political bargaining should be taken out of the process for assigning seats in the European Parliament, according to researchers from European universities. The current formula for arranging the number of seats each country gets leads to smaller countries losing out. But the new mathematical formula, dubbed the ‘Cambridge Compromise’ would guarantee each member state six Members of the European Parliament. The parliament’s Constitutional Affairs Committee has welcomed the report.
