Targeting bowel cancer’s ‘Achilles heel’

A researcher from The University of Western Australia is part of an international that has identified new treatment options for bowel cancer.

The team discovered the genetic processes that cause specific types of bowel cancer. They studied mice to discover how genes co-operate to cause a specific subset of colon cancers.

The team identified the culprits, the order in which they occur during tumour progression, and the molecular processes which turn relatively benign cell growth into threatening cancers.

Their findings will enable cancer patients to get treatment based on their unique genetic profile.
