Teachers wary of grammar

Nearly half of all teachers worldwide do not feel confident when teaching grammar, according to a study by the University of Canberra.

Researchers found that teachers lacked confidence in teaching grammar because it is often subjective, making it difficult to be completely certain what to teach. Teachers, particularly non-native speakers, also found it difficult to make grammar interesting for students.

    Both this brief and the original article were news to me - sad and enraging news. The idea that grammar is subjective is, quite simply, wrong. In an English sentence, the verb must occupy a particular position, must obey the rules of person, number and tense and if it does not, sense and meaning will fall apart.
