Scientists have used test tubes to discover coral’s secret to building their external skeletons. The Rutgers Institute study found coral producing proteins that formed limestone in test tubes.
Coral will remain unaffected by rising acidity levels across the world’s oceans previously thought to affect their ability to produce protein.
The organism produces a matrix of proteins which forms its unique structure later forming limestone coral reefs.
This is the first step towards understanding how coral forms its structure and creates vital ecological systems on the ocean floor.
