Transcription factor II B (TFIIB) is a protein that binds to DNA to initiate the production of new proteins. When DNA damage occurs, TFIIB is altered so that it stops protein synthesis.
Scientists found this allows cells to prioritise other cellular functions to repair the DNA damage, and help prevent possible tumours.
