The good side of gossip

Gossiping can help us deal with stress and poor behaviour in others, a US study has found.

51 participants in the study played a point-scoring game. Volunteers who told others about cheating participants were able to lower their heart rate, which had been raised by observing bad behaviour in others.

Another experiment revealed that those who engage in gossip do so for primarily altruistic reasons.
