100 million sharks killed each year

An estimated 100 million sharks are killed each year, according to a new report.

New estimates on shark fishing have stated that an average of 100 million sharks are killed each year, largely due to the high demand for shark fin soup. These numbers could be anywhere from 63 million to 273 million, due to lack of data and many sharks being finned at sea and not reported.

Current levels of overfishing are untenable for shark populations, which are slow to reproduce and mature, leading to fears that if preventative measures are not put in place, many shark populations will become extinct in future.
