Medal counts at the Olympic Games are affected by the immigration of foreign athletes, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Maryland used data from the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games to compare country of birth and country for which the athlete won the medal. They found the countries with more medals had a higher number of migrant athletes competing.

On average, one out of ten medal winners in the Olympic Games were not originally from the country they were competing for.
