Trade in exotic pets online is far more prevalent and diverse than previously thought. Threatened species, invasive species and banned imports are all for sale.
The pet trade has spurred a wave of bird imports, leading to escapes or even deliberate releases of exotic species into the wild. New research reveals the threat they now pose to native birds.
Tackling this global problem requires an international effort – particularly by rich nations where the demand for exotic pets is increasing.
Using real apes and monkeys as actors in film and TV encourages people to see them as pets.
If we want any future for wild populations of the numerous species traded for pets, exhibits and use in medicines, drastic action is needed to control their international and domestic trade.
