Multivitamin supplements can effectively reduce the occurrence of pre-eclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication affecting 6% to 8% of pregnant Australian women.
Pre-eclampsia can occur when a pregnant woman is lacking antioxidants. It can be harmful to the mothers health and may result in premature delivery of the baby.
The researchers advise women who are planning to get pregnant to start taking multivitamins containing selenium as close to the beginning of their pregnancy as possible. The first trimester of a pregnancy is the critical time to prevent pre-eclampsia.
