New approval for planned home births

Home births are a safe option for women already at low risk of complications.

Researchers from the University of Technology, Sydney found that, when publicly funded with hospital back-up, home births had lower rates of harm both for women and babies.

Despite the low rate of Australian women opting for home births, around 0.5 per cent, the study calls for a properly governed program.
