New breakthrough in quantum electronics

A new discover in the field of quantum electronics could lead to a dramatic improvement of computing speeds, data storage, online security and connectivity.

The team of scientists, from Australia and the US, developed a new approach to incorporate rare earth ions into a diamond crystal.

Dr Igor Aharonovich, from the School of Physics and Advanced Materials, at University of Technology Sydney, said the technique could potentially lead to a new class of diamond materials with unique properties to explore and characterise.

In the future, the team hopes to harness the unique magnetic properties of these materials for applications in quantum information.
