New insights into how ovaries are formed

A new type of cell that plays a role in the development of ovaries and ovarian follicles has been identified by scientists.

The Gonadal Ridge Epithelial-Like cell (GREL), was found to be a precursor to both the cells on the surface of the ovary and the follicular cells.

Previously scientists believed ovarian cells were derived from epithelial cells on the surface of the developing ovary.

The research could lead to new insights into conditions such as premature ovarian failure, early menopause, polycystic ovarian syndrome and ovarian cancer.
