My broader expertise is in social innovation and sustainable development. I have research experience in climate change, socioeconomic development, and social cohesion for local and regional development policy and practice. I have also conducted research on climate change resilience strategies in London and Northeast England.

I lead Sustainable Places Research Institute's research programme on cities and sustainable places. This integrates the work related to sustainable urban transformations, governance of sustainable places, and spatial analysis and design of the built environment. Other relevant areas include community-led transition and adaptation, sustainable mobility, and integrative methods for sustainability science research and engagement.

My current areas of research cover:

- Social innovation for place based sustainable development
- Climate change policy and planning
- Urban and regional governance
