Alexander Beresford

Lecturer in the Politics of African Development, University of Leeds

I joined POLIS in 2011 after completing my doctorate in the Centre of African Studies at the University of Edinburgh. I teach on the International Development programme here in Leeds. In particular, I lead the teaching of the modules ‘Making of the Global South’ and ‘Development and Social Change’.

Research Interests
My research interests include South African politics, the international political economy of labour, civil society, democratisation, populism, party systems and African politics more broadly. My thesis examined the relationship between class and nationalist politics in post-apartheid South Africa and, in particular, the relationship between the trade unions and the ruling party.
