PhD Candidate, Department of East Asian Languages & Culture, SOAS, University of London

Allan is a PhD candidate at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, working on Korean literature and queer theory. Specifically, Allan focuses on the contemporary works of the female South Korean novelist Kim Hyena, whose works deal with marginalised characters. As well as the 'queering' of family, gender, and the body found in Kim's works, Allan is also arguing that there exists a device of 'junkification,' wherein subjects experience a process of character, spiritual, and bodily negation that concludes with self-actualisation. He is also Korean Language teacher at the London School of Economics' Language Centre. Allan has also taught Korean at SOAS.

Allan's academic areas of interest are LGBTQIA+ studies, poetry, film, astrology, and veganism.
