A. Frances Johnson is a poet, novelist, artist and a senior lecturer in creative writing at the University of Melbourne. In 2017, through a grant from the Australia Council for the Arts, she had a six-month writing residency at the BR Whiting Studio in Rome. She completed her PhD in the School of Culture and Communication in Creative Writing, University of Melbourne. The dissertation examined portrayals of Indigenous characters in recent Australian historical fiction; the novel accompanying the dissertation evoked the life and times of colonial artist Eugene von Guerard. Explorations of landscape and memory in Australian culture are a common thread across her art and writing projects.
