Professeur honoraire d'histoire et politique internationales, Graduate Institute – Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement (IHEID)

I am a Canadian professor, born in England of Polish parents (Polish is my mother tongue) and have lived in Switzerland for over thirty years. I studied in Canada (McGill) the USA (Harvard) and the UK (Oxford). I am particularly interested in Eastern Europe and postcommunist Europe, whose neuroses are similar, in my mind, to those I encountered in Quebec. I am also interested in nationalism, an interest that seems unlikely given my early interest in Hegel and Marx. I have worked on Roma issues and citizenship issues-
I have authored several books, edited a dozen or so, and written numerous articles. Among my books is Between Ideology and Utopia: The Politics and Philosophy of August Cieszkowsk, Les Minorités nationales en Europe centrale et orientale,.From the Other Shore: Russian Social Democracy after 1921 (translated into Romanian), Wickham Steed: Greatest Journalist of His Times, and ,most recently, The Politics of a Disillusioned Europe: East Central Europe after the Fall of Communism. A book that is to appear shortly is Cultural Nationhood and Political Statehood: The Birth of Self-Determination
