Professor of Language and Literacies Education, University of Regina

My name is Andrea Sterzuk. I’m a teacher, teacher educator, and educational researcher. I speak/write English, French and Spanish and I’m learning Plains Cree, Saulteaux and Ukrainian. I have a Bachelor of French Education from the University of Regina, an MA in Second Language Education from McGill University, and a PhD in Second Language Education with a specialization in Language Acquisition from McGill University. My previous experiences include teaching, teacher education, and educational research in Mexico, Malawi, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Québec, and Saskatchewan, where I now live.

I am a full professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Regina where I teach graduate and undergraduate courses. My overarching research interest is the relationship between settler-colonialism and language. Over the past twenty years that I have worked as a language researcher, my activities have primarily been in following three interconnected areas: 1) language variation, multilingualism and educational institutions; 2) language-in-education policy and practice; and 3) Indigenous language revitalization. I sit on the editorial board of several journals (Canadian Modern Language Review; International Multilingual Research Journal, and the AILA Review). I’m a board member of the Centre for Applied Linguistics located in Washington, DC. And I’m a co-editor of a book series with De Gruyter Mouton (the Handbook of Applied Linguistics).

I’m currently the director of the Centre for Educational Research, Collaboration and Development (CERCD) in the Faculty of Education at the University of Regina. I’ve also held a number of other academic leadership roles: Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education (2017/2018), Acting Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Programs in the Faculty of Education (2015-2017), and Past President (2018-2020), President (2016-2018) and Vice President (2014-2016) of the Canadian Assocation of Applied Linguistics/Association canadienne de linguistique appliquée.
