Professor of Structural Biology, Universitat Pompeu Fabra

I am full professor of Structural Biology at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona since 2010. I obtained my PhD in 1992 in the Autonomous University of Barcelona. I performed research stays at Uppsala University (as PhD student and post-doctoral), Imperial Cancer Research Fund (post-doctoral with Prof. Sternberg), Rockefeller University (visiting professor with Dr. Sali), EMBL in Heidelberg (visting professor with Dr. Russell) and Leloir Institute in Buenos Aires (in a collaboration with Dr. Marino-Buslje). I am co-author of 9 book chapters and more than 145 peer reviewed articles published in journals included in SCI (noticing papers in Science, Nature Communications, Nature Methods, Mollecular Cell and Molecular Systems Biology, among others) and co-author in three patents. Director of 12 doctoral theses and several master theses. Principal Investigator of several projects granted by foundations (ie. Ramon Areces) and the spanish government, including a singular project with Infociencia S.L. in 2010, project co-leader in EraSysBio+ grant (SHIPREC) and TecnioSpring (2014) besides participating in other EU projects FP7 (INFOBIOMED and ANEURIST), IMI (eTOX and TRANSQST) and ERANET (CardioStressCI) of H2020. Member of the Editorial Board of BMC Bioinformatics, PLoS ONE, Frontiers in Bioinformatics and the Scientific Board of Anaxomics SL. I have reviewed articles for several journals, spanish grants for ANEP, argentinian grants for CONICET and german grants in systems biology (e:BIO) of BMBF. I worked in UAB as technical Head of Bionformatics sevices (1992-2001) and in UPF as associate professor (2001-2010). I was vice-dean of the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences of UPF (2006-2010) and secretary of the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (2011-2015). On my research, I have worked in the classification of protein loops (ArchDB) and homology modelling, on the analysis of protein-protein interaction networks (programs PIANA and BIANA), use the interaction network to associate genes/proteins with functions, pathological phenotypes and comorbidities (servers GUILDify2, GUILDify and ModLink). The development of tools to predict protein-DNA interactions, protein-interactions (BIPS, iLoops, iFrag, piPred), and statistic potentials for protein docking, homology modelling and protein-DNA binding profiles. The main objective of my research is to understand and analyse from a molecular view the mechanisms of biological networks and its application in biomedicine.
