Senior Lecturer in History of Ancient Medicine, Science and Technology, Royal Holloway University of London

After an old fashioned training in Latin and Greek in Heidelberg, I wrote my PhD on the manuscript transmission of a Byzantine text on eye diseases. I came to UCL on a postdoctoral post that was funded by the Wellcome Trust. Since then, I have been working on Greek medicine and Greek, Latin and Arabic medical lexicography. Currently, I am heading a Wellcome Trust funded Collaborative Award together with colleagues from Kew Gardens, RHUL Geology, Zurich and Haifa. We are developing a protocol on the identification of medicinal plants mentioned in pre-modern sources.
