I research and teach literature and theory, with particular emphases on time, the novel, reading and readers.
I am the the co-author of Reading Novels During the Covid-19 Pandemic (2022), author of Sex, Time, and Space in Contemporary Fiction (2016), editor of John Burnside: Contemporary Critical Perspectives (2020), and co-editor of Sex, Gender and Time in Fiction and Culture (2011).
I am currently working on a project examining the relationship between the value of reading and time use in the twenty-first-century university. This is supported by research funding from the Council for the Defence of British Universities.
