Professor of English linguistics, University of Amsterdam

Bertus van Rooy is professor of English linguistics and chair of the English department at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands from early 2020. For the previous 21 years, he was at the North-West University, teaching English and Afrikaans, and director of the Research Focus Area "Understanding and Processing Language in Complex Settings" on the Vaal Triangle Campus between 2009 and 2018. He completed a PhD in Linguistics in 1999, and since then has done research on linguistic variation in English in South Africa, Africa and elsewhere in the world, alongside work on the grammar of Afrikaans. 19 PhD students and 14 MA students completed their research under his guidance already, while he has more than 70 scholarly publications to his name. He serves on the editorial board of three major international journals in the field of English linguistics.
