Dr Carlos Uxo graduated from Universidad Complutense (Madrid, Spain). He taught Spanish first in Wellington, New Zealand, and then at La Trobe University where he completed a Master by Research on Spanish literature. In 1997 he joined the Spanish Department at Dublin City University, where he worked until coming back to La Trobe in 2002. Here, he completed his PhD on the representation of black characters in Cuban literature, a topic that remains his main focus of interest. He is also interested in the socioeconomic conditions of Cuba after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuban crime fiction, and pedagogy of Spanish as a Foreign Language. In 2009 he was awarded a Merit Citation for outstanding contribution to the teaching of Beginners Spanish at La Trobe University.
