Catherine Pereira-Kotze

Associate research scientist, University of the Western Cape

I have a PhD in Public Health from the University of the Western Cape, a Masters in Nutrition from Stellenbosch University and am a Dietitian registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. I have been working in the field public health nutrition since 2005. My work experience includes the programme management of and research in maternal, infant, and young child nutrition, and nutritional management of communicable and non-communicable diseases (from working for the Department of Health in South Africa for eight years); I then worked on a global infant and young child feeding research project (for three years), spent five years working in academia and during much of this time and beyond, have been working in research. I am passionate about maternal, infant, and young child nutrition, and the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding. I am striving to make a difference to the lives of the most vulnerable groups. I spent most of my life in Cape Town, was based in Johannesburg for work from 2013-2016 and in 2020, relocated to the UK. I am currently working as a Senior Nutritionist at First Steps Nutrition Trust and a consultant to Alive and Thrive East Asia Pacific.
