Charles Fairchild

Associate Professor of Popular Music, University of Sydney

I am an Associate Professor of Popular Music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, Australia. I've written mostly about the role of cultural intermediaries in the music industry, including studies of popular music museums, the “Idol” phenomenon, the use of music in television and film, and the work of music presenters at community radio stations in Australia, Canada and the USA. I am the author of 'Musician in the Museum' (Bloomsbury, 2021), 'Sounds, Screens, and Speakers' (Bloomsbury Academic, 2019), and 'DJ Danger Mouse's The Grey Album' written as part of the 33 1/3 Series (Bloomsbury, 2014). I have also written 'Music, Radio and the Public Sphere' (Palgrave, 2012), 'Pop Idols and Pirates' (Ashgate, 2008), 'Community Radio and Public Culture' (Hampton, 2001) and a swag of articles in a range of academic journals such as 'Popular Music,' 'Media, Culture and Society' and 'Television and New Media.'
