Connor Youngberg

Lecturer, Department of Language and Linguistics, University of Essex

Connor is a linguist from New York City currently based at the University of Essex, contributing to teaching and research on phonetics and phonology.

He has a long standing interest in languages of the world and their variation. He is interested in English, Japanese and Italian languages and dialects, and has done fieldwork in New York City as well as further afield in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe and Kagoshima. He most definitely pronounces 'coffee' as 'cawfee'.

After studying languages at CUNY Hunter College and Kwansei Gakuin University, Connor completed an MA and PhD in Linguistics at SOAS, University of London. He then served as a post-doctoral researcher at the Université de Nantes before coming to Essex. His current research focuses on Japanese dialects and their syllable structures as well as consonant and vowel changes in modern New York City English.
