Professor of Epidemiology (in Psychiatry), Columbia University Medical Center

Dr. Hasin is Professor of Epidemiology in the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Mailman School of Public Health. She directs the Substance Dependence Research Group at New York State Psychiatric Institute, and the pre- and post-doctoral Substance Abuse Epidemiology Training Program in the Department of Epidemiology in Mailman. Dr. Hasin's research focuses on studies of alcohol and drug use disorders. She has published over 350 papers. Her studies are funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and other organizations. Her awards include a Senior Scientist and Mentoring award from NIAAA, and the Jellinek Memorial award for epidemiologic research on alcoholism. Dr. Hasin's research areas include the epidemiology of alcohol, drug and psychiatric disorders in the U.S.; time trends in these disorders; conceptualization and definitions of addiction and substance disorders; environmental and genetic influences; and technological enhancements of brief interventions to reduce drinking and drug use in HIV patients. Dr. Hasin is an internationally recognized expert who has participated in World Health Organization studies, and served on the National Advisory Council to NIAAA and the DSM-5 Substance Use Disorders Workgroup. Dr. Hasin's studies include the relationship of state marijuana laws to marijuana and other substances; time trends in alcohol and drug disorders in the U.S.; DSM-IV and DSM-5 definitions of substance and psychiatric disorders in national and clinical populations; and randomized trials of interactive voice response (IVR) and smartphone technologies to enhance the efficacy of brief interventions.
