Edith Szanto is an assistant professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama. Prior to coming to Alabama in 2019, she taught at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani for eight years in the Department of Social Sciences. She earned her PhD at the University of Toronto in 2012 and her MA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2004. She has written extensively about both Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan, as well as Syria where Dr. Szanto spent years researching contemporary Islamic practices, partly thanks to a Fulbright fellowship.
