I am working on a book called Uncertain Refuge: Ideas of Sanctuary in the Literature of Medieval England. The book explores the symbolic significance of seeking sanctuary in holy places--an essential aspect of the medieval judicial system and a crucial form of hospitality. I am interested in all medieval literature, from Chaucer to saints’ lives to romance; sacred and secular uses of physical space; translation; and exemplarity in narrative. I've published a book on exemplarity (False Fables and Exemplary Truth, Palgrave 2005) and assorted essays on Chaucer, Gower, the Gawain-poet, and episodic romance.
