As a veterinarian, Ellen is fascinated by the relationship between humans and other animals. A relationship which is influenced by several factors, like religion, culture, prosperity and legislation. As a PhD candidate, Ellen's current research area focuses on 'medical-ethical questions regarding euthanasia of animals and the role of the veterinarian'.

In her research she makes use of qualitative research to get a better understanding of how veterinarians perceive their role in end-of-life situations, what considerations are relevant in the decision-making process, and what potential bottlenecks are relevant in end-of-life decision-making.
